Hi Sue:
I have used Royal Icing for a variety of holiday decorations, including Easter eggs and gingerbread houses. I kept some of the decorations for atleast ten years until they were destroyed in a flooded storage area. You will have to store them so they stay dry and dirt/dust free. Oh, and also, some of the bold colors (Christmas red and green) tended to fade after a few years. I think, however, this was not as much a storage-related fading but rather exposure to sunlight when on display.
One tip when handling Royal Icing, make sure all of your bowls, scrapers, etc. are completely oil/grease free. The slightest bit of oil will ruin your entire batch of icing. And, do not leave your unused icing exposed to the air -- keep it tightly covered with celephane type wrap. Royal icing can begin to harden very quickly.
Hope this helps. And, have fun with your Royal Icing. I very much enjoy working with it! (I sometimes also used royal icing on wedding cakes.)
