Taped to an old recipe card and the newspaper clipping has yellowed with age... it's 'Plain' and rich in taste.

MERCY LIGONS' MONKEY BREAD

2 cups milk
1 cup butter (2 sticks), or margarine, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
2 packages dry yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water
2 large eggs
6 cups flour
1 cup melted butter (2 sticks)

Scald the milk and allow to cool. Add softened butter, sugar and salt. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add with eggs to slightly cooled milk mixture. Mix well and let stand at room temperature until yeast forms a froth on surface of milk mixture. Gradually beat in flour with wooden spoon to make a soft dough. Transfer to a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk.

Punch down. Place in a warm spot and let rise about 1-1/2 hours until triple in volume.

Punch down again and allow to rise again. Roll out dough and cut into 3-inch diamond shapes. Dip each piece of dough into melted butter and layer in (6-cup) ring molds. There should be about three layers. Let rise about 1 hour.

Bake at 350 degrees 35 to 45 minutes until golden. Unmold.

Makes 2 loaves (in ring molds)

I think I made this in a 10-inch tube cake pan.
