can think of a couple of reasons you might have had popcorn balls falling apart:

first the syrup solution might have been undercooked- spinning a thread before you poured it over your popped corn??? it must be cooked to this stage

second -was it a day with high humidity? this sometimes affects it the same as with divinity.
