This is my grandmother's recipe.

APPLE POVATICA

1 Tbsp. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups warm water
4 to 6 cups flour
10 large apples (or 24 small)
1 to 1 1/2 cups sugar
Some ground cinnamon
a couple of tablespoons of melted butter.

Put salt, shortening into water, let melt.

Mix into flour, keep adding flour till not sticky. Knead for awhile, so as to be firm, free from sticking to hands. Put into large greased bowl or pan and let rest for 1 hour.

In meantime, peel and core, then slice apples.

Put sheet on table (I pin it around the legs. sprinkle with flour.) Grease hands with oil or butter before stretching dough. Stretch dough on table.

Spread apples on dough, sprinkle with sugar, some cinnamon, and melted butter. Cut off excess dough around edges. Roll up like a jelly roll and place in baking pan.

Bake at 350 degrees F for at least one hour.
