RING-AROUND BEEF PATTIES

1 pound ground beef
1 (2 ounce) can mushroom stems and pieces, undrained
Milk (as needed)
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs
2 tablespoons chopped onion
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 egg, beaten
2 large green peppers
FOR TOPPING:
2 tablespoons catsup
2 tablespoons grated American cheese

Drain mushrooms, reserving liquid. Add enough milk to mushroom liquid to make 1/2 cup liquid.

Combine ground beef, mushrooms, the 1/2 cup liquid, bread crumbs, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and egg; set aside.

Remove ends and seeds from green peppers. Cut each into 3 (one-inch thick) rings. Place green pepper rings in a shallow baking pan. Pack meat mixture into pepper rings.

Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F) for 35 minutes.

Combine catsup and grated cheese and spoon over patties. Continue baking 10 minutes.

Makes 6 servings
