I've made this type of cake many times and have
gotten lots of oohs and ahhs!
Bake a cake in a glass 2 quart batter bowl and then invert it. This is the 'gown' of the fairy princess or Barbie's ball gown.
Tightly cover a Barbie doll or other type of 12" fashion doll in plastic wrap, around the legs and torso. (Wrap around the torso as though the doll is wearing a strapless gown.) You then place the doll into the center of the cake up to her hips.
You can then frost on her gown, decorating with icing ruffles and flowers.
I also frost around the torso, just like a strapless gownwould be. (Which is why you cover her with plastic wrap.) If you are serving
a large crowd, You can bake a base in a larger flower shaped or round panand then place the 'gown
cake' on top of the base.
Having the base works well for writing happy
birthday on it and for placing the candles.
